To be eligible for unemployment benefits in Colorado, Holmes would have to have been laid off through no fault of his own and have earned at least $2,500 from work during four of the previous five quarters. But did Holmes ever have a job?

Some reports suggested he couldn't find work, while others have suggested he could. The New York Daily News reported that Holmes worked at McDonald's.

But according to McDonald's, that's not true. "Based on our information, the individual has never been employed by a company-owned or franchised McDonald's restaurant," company spokeswoman Julie Pottebaum said in an email.

Holmes graduated with honors from University of California-Riverside in 2010 and enrolled at the University of Colorado Denver's graduate program in neurosciences in June 2011. The university said he had been in the process of withdrawing before the shooting occurred.

Holmes had received a grant from the National Institutes of Health that gives students a "$21,600 stipend per year in 12 monthly installments to help defray living expenses while they pursue their academic research training experience," according to an NIH spokesperson.

Sports fans, rejoice:?Friday marks the opening of the 2012 Olympic Games!?My family and I are definitely going to spend the next month or so gathered around the TV?and we?re not even big sports fans. But that?s what makes the Olympics so special: they?re not just about athletic achievement. The games are an expression of global unity and a celebration of human endurance. I have to admit, I often get teary watching the Olympics, and I?m sure I?m not the only one.

UNICEF knows all about the power and importance of sports, especially in a child?s life,?and uses sports in very targeted ways to improve the lives of children.

Getting kids?involved with sports?is a great way to reach children who are marginalized, like those living with HIV/AIDS, orphaned children, or former child soldiers.? Recently UNICEF and the International Cricket Council joined forces to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS.?They have launched a ?campaign to spread HIV awareness, and are sponsoring local cricket teams where kids will learn how to protect themselves against HIV. ?This is just one example of how UNICEF uses sports to help children.

Franchising Can Mitigate Risk, Even For Riskier Industries | The ...

Restaurants are among the riskiest start-up businesses, even for experienced businesspersons. I financed several when I was in the commercial mortgage banking business and had abysmal results. All of the non-franchised restaurants failed within the first two years.

?

One restaurant failed after four months because the owner ran out of working capital. Another didn?t make it because of inadequate parking. I financed a fine-dining restaurant for a gourmet chef who made mouthwatering food but had little financial management experience. It failed in less than a year.

?

I learned from my mistakes and financed a new restaurant for an experienced owner with a history of industry success. But that did not work either. He catered to a young and fickle drinking crowd because the margins were more profitable. As a result, he paid less attention to his food menu. When a trendier watering hole opened in the neighborhood, his customers? loyalty waned and the bar-hoppers patronized the new place. My borrower?s business failed.

?

All of these loans were partially guaranteed by the U.S. Small Business Administration and the agency buffered some of our losses. Even so, I stopped making restaurant loans without the backing of a proven franchise brand.

?

Choosing a successful brand and getting an SBA guarantee are important keys to successful franchise lending for startups. To my surprise, however, four restaurant brands are among the worst 14 of SBA?s Franchise Failure by Brand 2011. The list does not include the franchises purchased for all cash or conventionally financed.

?

So I asked Bob Melberth, a franchising coach, consultant and broker with The Entrepreneur?s Source why some restaurant franchises fail. The former McDonald?s executive says food industry experience is an important prerequisite for restaurants even though it may not be for other types of franchises. Another reason for failure may be the franchise brand skimping on support staff, he says.

?

Even when franchisees choose a successful brand, Melberth says the number one reason that borrowers default is because ?failed partnerships, including marriages caused the most business failures.? And ?second is poor cash management and under capitalization.?

?

Melberth says studies show that over 90 percent of franchisees are ?still in business after ten years.? He says that successful brands have ?a proven business system, support from the franchisor and the franchisee community.?

?

That is why BoeFly and the International Franchise Association formed a strategic partnership to help entrepreneurs find and finance the franchise brand most suited to their needs. According to IFA, more franchise financing is needed to close a $2 billion gap between would-be franchisees and the amount of funding available. The trade association says by closing the gap, 94,000 jobs would be created.

BoeFly, in turn, is the online matchmaking platform that connects its over 2,200 lenders with franchise buyers and small-business borrowers nationwide. Conventional and SBA lenders are seamlessly linked with loan applicants that meet their profile. Some of BoeFly?s lenders also participate in rural loans backed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and a menu of state and municipal funding programs. Qualified borrowers get multiple offers and choose the one that best suits their needs.

Underwriting the borrower?s qualifications continues to be paramount for lenders even when the loan applicant chooses a successful franchise brand. Likewise, franchise coach Melberth says it is the case for diligent franchise brands. ?I had a brand in our portfolio not talk to a prospect because he had a $240,000 net worth and their brand requires $250,000,? he says.

?

Franchising is a good alternative to starting a business from scratch without a support system. Even so, choosing the right franchise and finding financing is not always easy.

?

Sweeping 'Grand Canyon' Discovered Beneath Antarctic Ice

A dramatic gash in the surface of the Earth that could rival the majesty of the Grand Canyon has been discovered secreted beneath Antarctica's vast, featureless ice sheet.

Dubbed the Ferrigno Rift for the glacier that fills it, the chasm's steep walls plunge nearly a mile down (1.5 kilometers) at its deepest. It is roughly 6 miles (10 km) across and at least 62 miles (100 km) long, possibly far longer if it extends into the sea.

The rift was discovered during a grueling 1,500-mile (2,400 km) trek that, save for a few modern conveniences, hearkens back to the days of early Antarctic exploration. And it came as a total surprise, according to the man who first sensed that something incredible was literally underfoot, hidden by more than a half-mile (1 km) of ice.

Old-school exploration

Robert Bingham, a glaciologist at the University of Aberdeen, along with field assistant Chris Griffiths, had embarked on a nine-week trip during the 2009-2010 field season to survey the Ferrigno Glacier, a region humans had visited only once before, 50 years earlier. Over the last decade, satellites have revealed the glacier is the site of the most dramatic ice loss in its West Antarctica?neighborhood, a fringe of coastline just west of the Antarctic Peninsula ? the narrow finger of land that points toward South America.

The two-man team set out aboard snowmobiles, dragging radar equipment behind them to measure the topography of the rock beneath the windswept ice, in a region notorious for atrocious weather. "It was literally one of the first days that we were driving across the ice stream, doing what we thought was a pretty standard survey, that I saw the bed of the ice just dropping away," Bingham said.

The drop was so sudden and so deep that Bingham drove back and forth across the area two or three more times to check the data, and saw the same pattern. "We got the sense that there was something really exciting under there," he told OurAmazingPlanet. "It was one of the most exciting science missions I've ever had."

Slippery implications

Bingham compared the hidden chasm to the Grand Canyon in scale, but said that tectonic forces of continental rifting ? in contrast to erosion ? created the Ferrigno Rift, wrenching the fissure's walls apart probably tens of millions of years ago, when Antarctica was ice-free.

Excitement surrounding the discovery has deeper implications than the mere gee-whiz factor of finding such a massive feature. The Ferrigno Rift's "existence profoundly affects ice loss," Bingham and co-authors from the British Antarctic Survey wrote in a paper published in Nature today (July 25).

"The geology and topography under the ice controls how the ice flows," said Robin Bell, a geophysicist and professor at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, who was not associated with the research. "Ice will flow faster over sediments, like those found in rifts," said Bell, a veteran Antarctic researcher, who has long studied yet another dramatic, yet invisible geological feature, the hidden Gamburtsev Mountains?in East Antarctica.?

In addition, the study authors write, the rift is providing a channel for warm ocean water to creep toward the interior of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, gnawing away at the Ferrigno Glacier from below.

Together, these two factors could be speeding the glacier's march to the sea, and the overall effects could have implications for the stability of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, which is responsible for 10 percent of global sea level rise that is currently happening.

Scientists are still only just beginning to understand the myriad mechanisms that control the seemingly dramatic melting observed in regions of West Antarctica, and how climate change is affecting all the moving parts.

"With something like the Antarctic ice sheet, some of these processes take centuries, and the amount of time we've been able to observe changes is at the maximum 20 years," Bingham said. "It's a very small amount of time."

"We need to gather more data," he said.

14. More 4th wave internet marketers will emerge.?They will be selling you blog networks, software suites, audiences, ad campaigns, e-commerce sites, niche websites, blogs??you name it.?
15. University educations will start to look more like internet marketing training, and internet marketing training will start to look more like university educations.?They?ll converge and find a middle ground in the?coming?decade.
16. If you want to start a blog about entrepreneurship or personal development and you don?t have an angle that gets everyone in the room FREAKING PUMPED and saying they?d buy products from such a publisher??don?t do it. It?s getting harder. The good news is that it?s easier to spend your energy on creating a great premise than it is publishing blog posts into the inter-nether world.

Looking down the Road: Budgeting for Vehicle ... - Financial Highway

Nothing can harpoon your attempts at responsible financial planning like an unforeseen repair bill. If you are operating under a tight month-to-month budget, unexpected automobile expenses can, in one swift motion, throw your budget in the red, and jeopardize your entire financial plan.

Furthermore, failure to properly budget for anticipated vehicle maintenance ? oil changes, new wiper blades, tire upgrades ? can lead to you putting off needed upkeep, which in the long run will leave you stranded on the side of the road and your budgeting efforts in shambles.

For this reason, it is wise to start an automotive maintenance fund within your personal or family budget that will pay for anticipated expenses, and at the very least, provide some extra buffer for those times when you have to bit the bullet and pay for an unexpected ? and costlier ? repair.

As you likely already know, the best way to budget for future expenses is to analyze past expenditures, and this is the first step to any auto maintenance budget. Using your bank statements and vehicle maintenance records, tally up all the money you spent on auto maintenance and repairs in the past month ? don?t include gas, insurance, or registration fees in this number, as those should really be in a separate, albeit related, category.

Now divide that number by 12, to figure out how much you spent per month. If you didn?t have any major repairs done on your automobiles in the last year, I strongly urge you to add 25% to that figure, because you need to be squirrelling away enough money to pay for major repairs, even if you don?t foresee those happening. You can alter that 25% figure either up or down, depending on the age and condition of your vehicle ? if it is older and thus more likely to need repairs, you might add in an extra 50%; similarly if your vehicle is new, or recently underwent major upgrades, you might be able to get away with budgeting for the same amount that you spent last year.

So if you devoted $1200 to repairs and maintenance last year, you figure you spent on average $100 a month. Add in the extra 25% buffer, and you need to plan for just under $125 a month for maintenance and repair costs.

Regardless of your past year?s auto maintenance expenses, it is generally prudent to stash away at least $100 per month for these expenses. Hopefully, you won?t have to burn through that much money in a year to keep your car running ? and if you have carryover at the end of the year, you can adjust the amount you save each month accordingly next year. In the long run, the goal is to have a couple thousand dollars saved up for vehicle expenses.

Keeping this money in a separate account ? away from your day-to-day expenses ? is advisable. Savings accounts are obviously perfect for this task, and you can make it easy on yourself by setting your account up to automatically add the given amount to savings each month.

Planning ahead and controlling your auto maintenance costs will prove to be beneficial in other indirect ways, as well. You?ll be able to think ahead and ensure that proper maintenance is done on schedule, your long term maintenance expenses will likely go down as you focus on prevention of major problems, you?ll also likely improve the bond you have with your repairman, as you can discuss your repair/maintenance budget with him/her, improving the lines of communication.

Finally, like many sound budgeting techniques, the payoff will come with extra cash in your pocket and, maybe even more importantly, you?ll obtain some peace-of-mind, knowing that if an unforeseen expense arises, you are prepared for it.

GIRLS WITH GAME? COMPLEX GAMING'S Faux Pas

Many times girl gamers are viewed as tomboys who sit on a couch and play video games while eating cheetoes. Well, that may very well be the case but as with every other stereotype; this is not true for all girl gamers. Gaming companies as well as gamers' websites are slowly coming to terms with the changes in the gaming community and the strong presence of females within.

However, some like Complex Gaming have taken it to the extreme by turning a model into a gamer for the ?girl gamers are also hot? market.? As much as it pleases me that people can see girl gamers as also say playing games while drinking a glass of wine and swapping those cheetos for some rosemary and olive oil potato chips, this looses it value when the person chosen to participate as such are not portrayed as true gamers. The article on Jess Oliver Proulx, does not show to the public women a successful and good looking gamer, but instead a Maxim-like cover for the male gamer community to feast their eyes on ?resulting in a counterproductive effect.?There are some sweet gaming moments about her life in the report, like the instance in which she heard someone say her Nintendo was buggy so she ?didn't go near it for the first few days because? she ?thought there where real bugs in it." However, this is written bellow a very suggestive picture of Proulx in her underwear. I?m guessing yes she must like to play in her underwear, and that was the rationale behind the photo shoot, but I don?t see anything around her to identify her as a girl gamer. Of course one does not necessarily need to wear Nintendo memorabilia to be considered a gamer but the article is titled: Girls with Game: Jess Oluiver-Proulx Talks MMO's and RPG's and Pulling the Diablo Card. The most I was expecting honestly was some Diablo body tattoo.
Upon reading the first page and getting through the slight shock of an, at the risk of sounding too retrograde, ??in your face? ?type of picture, there is still something to look forward to for a few lines below we find out that ?Jess' love for video games hasn't faded but has evolved into a career in writing about her very passion?. Yet when we clip over, we find nothing further in that regard; what we do find is another picture of the provocatively clad Proulx, this time holding a Guitar Hero guitar against her half-naked hot bod. I guess she must be a gamer then?? who initiates slow-mo left to right smirk on my face operation! We don?t find out what she does in regards to gaming until the very end of this interview, after five more pictures of pretending to play, or what ever that was. I get that she is a model and this fact has merit, but as a woman and a gamer I have to say this piece was a faux pas and does not speak well of the female gamer community. Furthermore, I do not buy into the belief that bad publicity is better than none and upon closer inspection, Proulx actually has a very cool job at g33kpron.com, a site based on the ?geeky-cool? culture where she writes articles like Is Social Media Making Us Socially Awkward and Adult Swim Presents: Black Dynamite. That being said, I really do not understand why she was portrayed as Hot Model with Gaming Props as opposed to the much more awesome portrayal like, Girl Gamer with Hot Model Credentials or something like that.
