Clearer picture of how assassin bugs evolved: Entomologists reconstruct the evolutionary history

ScienceDaily (Oct. 25, 2012) ? Assassin bugs, so named because these insects lie in ambush for prey that they attack with speed and precision, are found all over the world. Nearly 140 species of these bugs are blood-sucking; because they can bite humans around the mouth, they are also called kissing bugs. All kissing bugs can spread Chagas disease, a neglected tropical disease that imposes an economic burden on society.

Surprising, then, that scientists' understanding of the evolutionary history of assassin bugs is riddled with difficulty. The data are incomplete. Fossils, which exist for only a few groups of assassin bugs, are young, providing only patchy information on how these bugs evolved.

Now entomologists at the University of California, Riverside have produced a clearer snapshot of the entire evolutionary history of assassin bugs by integrating molecular, paleontological, behavioral and ecological data into their analyses. The result of their painstaking work is a new phylogeny -- the representation of the evolutionary relationships between species -- for assassin bugs. It includes the most number of assassin bugs to date and represents the most number of subfamilies.

"We can now zoom in on specific groups within the phylogeny to examine specific aspects of the evolution of that group," said Christiane Weirauch, an associate professor of entomology who reconstructed the assassin bug phylogeny with her Ph.D. graduate student Wei Song Hwang. "Our phylogeny significantly improves our knowledge about relationships within assassin bugs and will guide future research work in understanding how some of the interesting prey specialization behaviors and prey capture techniques have evolved."

Study results appeared last month in PLoS ONE.

"One significant improvement is the addition of several assassin bug species from the subfamily Reduviinae, the second largest subfamily of assassin bugs," said Hwang, the first author of the research paper. "Previous phylogenies have a very limited representation of Reduviinae, which means the overall interpretation of the phylogeny is of limited value."

Assassin bugs are estimated to have originated during the Middle Jurassic (~178 million years ago), making them a relatively old group of insects. They diversified significantly in the Late Cretaceous (~97 million years ago); indeed, nearly 90 percent of the existing species diversity we see today in assassin bugs started to diversify from this time onwards. The cause of this diversification remains unknown.

Blood-feeding kissing bugs

Weirauch and Hwang also determined that kissing bugs originated just 27-32 million years ago, the previous estimate being 107 million years ago. Mostly found in Central and South America, these bugs have evolved to feed on vertebrate blood -- lizards, birds, opossums, armadillos, bats, etc., and humans -- and can be found in diverse environments, from the Sonoran desert to the Amazon rainforest.

"The previous estimate of 107 million years ago linked the diversification of kissing bugs with the splitting of South America from Antarctica and provided a longer time-span for kissing bugs to speciate and spread across the continent and adapt," Hwang said. "Our research shows that this is not the case. By including more data and improving estimation methods, our younger estimate of 27-32 million years ago matches the time when the hosts, mainly mammals and birds, were diversifying at a rapid rate in South America."

The researchers caution that as natural environments get altered, more kissing bugs may be seen adapting to new environments and hosts rather than going extinct.

"The colonization of human settlements by wild kissing bugs we are witnessing now is thus likely to increase in intensity as more natural environments are replaced by human activities," Hwang said.

With their comprehensive sampling of assassin bugs and large molecular dataset, Weirauch and Hwang also show that the blood-feeding kissing bugs either have a single origin or two separate but close origins. Until now, the possibility of two separate but close origins of kissing bugs had not been hypothesized nor demonstrated.

"The possibility that there are two separate lineages implies that there will be shared traits among the lineages, but also slight differences we need to be aware of when developing different preventative strategies," Hwang explained. "A single origin, on the other hand, means we can expect common traits shared among all kissing bugs that can be targeted for control or monitoring."

Building the Tree of Life

The current research is part of the scientific endeavor to reconstruct the entire Tree of Life -- the biological concept that all living organisms are related and can be traced back to a single ancestor representing the origin of life on Earth.

"Reconstructing a phylogeny, a framework from which we can infer the evolutionary history of any group of organisms, is thus the first step towards understanding how life evolved, how different species relate to one another, how specific traits evolved over time, and why biodiversity occurs the way it does today," Weirauch said.

The study was financially supported by the Partnership for Enhancing Expertise in Taxonomy (PEET) program of the National Science Foundation, the UCR Department of Entomology, a UCR Graduate Division Dissertation Year Program Award and an American Museum of Natural History Collection Study Grant.

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russian opposition leaders urged President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday to stop clamping down on dissent and warned they would ask Western governments to freeze assets of Russian officials involved in a spiraling crackdown on the opposition.

Alexei Navalny and other opposition activists who were elected to the opposition's Coordinating Council in a weekend online ballot accused the Kremlin of unleashing a campaign of "direct and forceful pressure against its opponents in rude violation of Russian and international law."

They pointed at what they said was the abduction of opposition activist Leonid Razvozzhayev from neighboring Ukraine as an example of the repression of dissenters. The opposition leaders warned that government officials and law-enforcement officers will face "imminent punishment for their crimes against Russian citizens."

They said the opposition will hold a rally in Moscow in support of Razvozzhayev and other jailed opposition members this weekend.

"The Coordinating Council will demand the arrest of all foreign assets of the masterminds and perpetrators of the abduction, torture and illegal criminal repression against the opposition," the opposition leaders said in a statement.

Russia's top investigative agency formally charged Razvozzhayev on Tuesday with orchestrating riots. The agency said he had turned himself in, but Razvozzhayev and his supporters said he was kidnapped from Ukraine where he was seeking asylum, smuggled back into Russia and tortured into confessing that he organized riots.

Members of a Russian prisoners' rights watchdog, who spoke Wednesday after meeting with Razvozzhayev in jail, said unidentified abductors forced him to make "confessions" by threatening to kill him and his family.

Valery Borshchev and other members of the Public Observation Commission said the masked men who abducted Razvozzhayev kept him in handcuffs and leg chains in a basement for three days, denying him food, water, sleep and a toilet until he signed the confessions.

"They accompanied it all with threats, telling him that they know everything about his children and that his children and his wife will be dead," Borshchev said.

Borshchev's colleague, Lidiya Dubikova, said Razvozzhayev looked anemic and his speech was slow, as if he had been drugged. Razvozzhayev told rights defenders that he feared the men who forced him to make confessions would return.

Amnesty International said Wednesday that the claims about Razvozzhayev's abduction and torture "are extremely disturbing" and urged Russia to "ensure such allegations are promptly, effectively and independently investigated."

Charges against Razvozzhayev stemmed from hidden camera footage aired earlier this month by a Kremlin-friendly TV channel. The documentary claimed that leftist leader Sergei Udaltsov met with a Georgian lawmaker to raise money for organizing riots in Moscow and several other Russian cities. Udaltsov rejected the charges and said the footage was a sham.

Udaltsov already was questioned last week and he fears arrest. One of his aides was arrested last week.

Opposition and rights activists denounced the case against Udaltsov and other activists as a throwback to the times of Soviet-era repression. "The evidence of abduction and torture of Razvozzhayev is like a message from hell," gallery owner Marat Gelman wrote in his blog.

Putin has methodically raised the pressure on the opposition since he was sworn in for a third term in May. Protest leaders have faced interrogations, searches and criminal charges, and the Kremlin-controlled parliament churned out a series of repressive bills to discourage people from joining protests and to introduce new tough restrictions on non-government organizations.

On Tuesday, Russian lawmakers passed a new bill offering a new broad definition of treason, which rights activists say is so loose that it could allow officials to brand any dissenter a traitor. Earlier this month, Moscow declared an end to the U.S. Agency for International Development's two decades of work in Russia, saying the agency was using its money to influence elections ? a claim the U.S. denied.

And despite an international outrage against the two-year prison sentence given to members of the Pussy Riot punk band for an irreverent anti-Putin protest at Moscow's main cathedral, two of them were sent to remote prison colonies this week. The third one was released after a court suspended her sentence.

Despite the modern convenience of electronic communication and the popularity of social networking sites, it seems many people today have difficulty getting past surface level and developing lasting friendships. Many people also seem to lack a sense of community ? having somewhere they feel they belong to; where they can interact with others face to face.

Are we losing the skills needed to develop strong close relationships that last the test of time? The truth is: we can?t achieve a whole lot on our own ? we need to join with others in every area of life.

When difficulties arise within a partnership it may seem easier to walk away than to stick with it and work through the problems. Our culture seems to encourage walking away from difficulties.

• It can feel easier to walk away form a marriage that is in crisis.

Maybe we don?t fully understand or value the long term benefits of lifelong partnerships ? ones built on mutual principles, character and trust. Learning the keys to sticking together can unlock great potential.

Romney Campaign advisor Rep. Diaz-Balart: Romney will win Florida

The final presidential debate between President Obama and Mitt Romney wrapped up Monday night with plenty to say about both the president and the GOP nominee?s views about foreign policy issues. But with only 13 days remaining before Election Day, it?s really all up to voters in key battleground states to determine the winner.

The latest polls show a virtually tied race in Florida, but Rep. Diaz-Balart says he feels ?very confident that Mitt Romney will win Florida.? ?And I think he?ll win with stronger numbers than people may suspect at this time,? he says.

Sambolin asks Diaz-Balart about critical demographics in Florida, starting with Latino voters. Recent polls show conflicting views of who the Latino community in Florida will vote. Rep. Diaz-Balart says ?you?re starting to see a shift in the actual numbers of those who are likely to vote,? among Latinos in Florida.

Regarding women voters, Sambolin asks if Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock?s recent comments about rape being intended by God could hurt Romney?s chances with women. He recently shot a campaign ad for Mourdock. Diaz-Balart says the American voters are ?smarter than that? and can separate Mitt Romney as a presidential candidate. ?You can try to link controversial statements to the president or controversial statements to Mitt Romney, but the American people, frankly, they?re bigger and they?re smarter than a lot of times either politicians or members of the press believe that they are.?

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Arlington National Cemetery on Monday made available to the public a massive electronic database detailing the gravesites of the roughly 400,000 people buried there.

Cemetery officials built the database over the last two years to verify the accuracy of their records brought into question by reports of misidentified graves. Prior to 2010, the cemetery used paper records and maps to track who is buried where.

On Monday at the Association of the United States Army convention in Washington, the cemetery debuted an interactive map available through its website and through a free smartphone app. It uses geospatial technology to hone in on specific graves and can also be searched by name.

It can be accessed through the cemetery's website www.arlingtoncemetery.mil

When a name is called up, a viewer can see when the person was buried and the dates of their birth and death. Photos of the front and back of the headstone can also be viewed. Monuments and memorials that commemorate the service of specific military units are also included in the database.

The application also highlights some of the notable graves throughout the cemetery that are popular with the roughly 4 million visitors annually that the cemetery draws.

"This is a great day for veterans and our families," said Kathryn Condon, executive director of the Army National Military Cemeteries, which includes Arlington.

Officials say the new app makes it easier for people walking the cemetery to locate a loved one's burial place. The app can be downloaded at the cemetery's visitor center.

The database has been the subject of a painstaking review and even now is not 100 percent complete. Katharine Kelley, the cemetery's director of accountability, said that about 99.4 percent of the nearly 260,000 gravesites, niches and markers have been verified.

The remaining few deal largely with some of the cemetery's oldest graves and records, which date to the Civil War. In many cases, it may be an effort to verify the spelling of the first name of a spouse buried at the cemetery among disparate handwritten records.

Condon said she could not say how much it cost to develop the website and mobile app, largely because the work to develop the technology was conducted in house.

The geospatial technology used to power the smartphone is the same that the cemetery uses to coordinate the 25 to 30 burials conducted there every day. Care is taken to ensure, for example, that maintenance work at the cemetery is not conducted at the same time and place as a burial service.

Arlington officials say the cemetery is one of the most technically advanced in the nation.

Experts: Egg Freezing No Longer 'Experimental' | FOX8.com - WJW

(CNN) ? Freezing a woman?s eggs should no longer be considered ?experimental,? according to the American Society of Reproductive Medicine, a move that signals the technique is now standard for infertility treatment.

The society reviewed data from four randomized controlled trials and various observational studies that compared fertilization rates, embryo implantation rates and pregnancy rates of fresh eggs versus eggs that were frozen using a method called vitrification.

Overall, frozen (or vitrified) eggs had fertilization rates between 71 and 79%, implantation rates between 17 and 41% and clinical pregnancy rates (positive pregnancy tests) between 36 and 61%.

The data also showed no increase in birth defects, developmental disorders or chromosomal abnormalities when in vitro fertilization cycles were conducted with frozen eggs, leading the society to declare the technique effective and safe.

?The technology and technique are getting better, and success rates are good,? said Dr. Samantha Pfeifer, chairwoman of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine?s practice committee. ?So with those studies, we felt comfortable saying there is a lot of information on how oocyte cryopreservation is improving.?

?Vitrification is basically the solidification of a solution without ice crystallization,? said Dr. Zsolt Peter Nagy, embryologist and scientific director at Reproductive Biology Associates in Atlanta. ?And that?s very important.?

The lack of ice crystallization is key to the health of the egg because, as Nagy explained, ?ice crystallization that happens during slow freezing is the biggest danger for egg ? cryopreservation because ice crystals can damage the cell membranes, and it results in the degeneration of the eggs.

?In vitrification, there is no ice crystallization, so basically, you avoid that problem.?

Egg freezing has been marketed as a means for women without fertility issues to preserve their fertility beyond their peak childbearing years. Yet the American Society of Reproductive Medicine says its decision to drop the ?experimental? label should not be interpreted as an endorsement for women without infertility issues to freeze their eggs for future use.

?We think we should proceed cautiously in using this as an elective technique, especially in older patients,? said Dr. Eric Widra, chairman of the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology practice committee.

?There is an inherent conflict between the desire to freeze eggs and the need to freeze eggs. Freezing eggs for the future sounds like a good insurance policy but may not be an insurance policy that needs to be cashed in.?

Widra says that the best way to conceive is still through natural intercourse at an appropriate age and that vitrification should be reserved for women and couples with urgent infertility needs, like patients with medical indications that they will lose their fertility (perhaps a woman with cancer or a specific genetic condition), couples going through IVF who don?t have sufficient sperm or couples who are unable or unwilling to freeze embryos.

Other fertility specialists disagree, arguing that fertility is different for everyone and that women should consult with their doctors if they decide to put off pregnancy until their mid- to late 30s.

?Women unfortunately are getting married later, having children later, facing more infertility problems,? explained Nagy.

?Doing fertility preservation by egg cryopreservation is an option for them today. It was not an option in the past, but today it is an option.?

Dell announced Thursday a combination server, data storage and networking device, Active System 800. For one thing, as cloud computing really starts to catch on, it is getting hard to tell the difference between innovation and consolidation. Many of those companies would have been purchased by Dell?s competitors if Dell hadn?t got there first. Moving into the new era of cloud computing also involves rolling up the old era of separate computer businesses.

That is not necessarily a bad thing. Speaking at an event in San Francisco, Dell executives noted that coming into the business with newly acquired companies means it doesn?t have legacy businesses to sustain, which means it can focus research and development dollars on new products and services.

For another, everybody is headed for the cloud, and pronto. Dell aims this product mostly at small and medium-size businesses, or what the tech industry calls S.M.B.?s. What they get in this consolidated system acts in many ways like a larger cloud system, and offers access to cloud computing as needed. Longer term, Dell expects to move more S.M.B. computing to its own big cloud and sell computing as a service.

Which raises another issue: How quickly companies like Dell have to move now. Servers, networking and storage brought in just $2 billion of Dell?s $15.7 billion in revenue last quarter. Personal computers were over $8 billion, and that business is under extreme pressure, as people turn to smartphones and tablets.

Marius Haas, a well-regarded executive who came to Dell six weeks ago after stints at Hewlett-Packard and private equity firms, says Dell is moving fast to ?a transformation to higher-margin products, and selling solutions rather than point products.? In other words, things that aren?t like PCs. Where he talked about the PC of the future, it was in the context of a cheap ?thin client? device that is connected to the cloud.

Mr. Haas said that Dell would continue to focus on S.M.B.?s, which generally produce higher profit margins for Dell than the consumer or giant corporation sectors. But the things Dell is putting together and learning in those businesses, he said, would also go into proving itself in the largest and most demanding commercial computing environments, for example, on Wall Street.

While Dell seems to know what time it is, part of its challenge may involve educating its S.M.B. customers. ?A significant part of the market doesn?t understand why this matters yet,? said Matt Eastwood, an analyst with IDC. ?Dell is trying to show more hardware capability, and increase software and services,? he says, but at a scale that isn?t yet facing most of its customers.

The bet seems to be that the flood of computing everywhere, thanks to cloud computing and cloud-connected devices, will soon force those customers to buy more computers to keep up with the world. It seems like a smart bet.

"The Bachelor" Racial Discrimination Suit Dismissed

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - There's no telling how far Nathaniel Claybrooks and Christopher Johnson would have gotten on ABC's reality dating show "The Bachelor," but one thing's for certain -- they got voted out of the court system pretty early.

Would-be "Bachelor" contestants Claybrooks and Johnson suffered legal defeat in U.S. District Court in Tennessee Monday, when Judge Aleta A. Trauger dismissed the pair's suit.

Claybrooks and Johnson, who are both African-Americans, unsuccessfully applied to appear on "The Bachelor" in 2011 and subsequently claimed racial discrimination, noting that, in the 24 cumulative episodes of "The Bachelor" and its spinoff, "The Bachelorette," there has never been a Bachelor (e.g., Matt Grant, pictured) or Bachelorette of color, and the vast majority of suitors on the show have been white.

The defendants claimed that the series intentionally cast only white Bachelors and Bachelorettes, and that the producers have feared "potential controversy stemming from an interracial romance."

In a motion to dismiss, ABC and the other defendants, including Warner Horizon Television, presented a First Amendment argument, as well as invoking the "void-for-vagueness" doctrine.

Judge Trauger found merit in the First Amendment argument, writing in her opinion, "the court finds that the casting decisions are part and parcel of the creative process behind a television program - including the Shows at issue here - thereby meriting First Amendment protection against the application of anti-discriminating statutes to that process."

In their motion to dismiss, ABC and the other defendants argued that subjecting casting to anti-discrimination laws would have a wide-ranging impact for many television outlets.

"For example, the legality of any network targeting particular demographic groups would be called into question, including, inter alia, the Lifetime Network (targeted to female audiences), the Black Entertainment Channel (targeted to African-Americans), Telemundo (targeted to Latinos), the Jewish Channel, the Christian Broadcast Channel, the Inspiration Network (targeted to Protestants) and LOGO (targeted to gays and lesbians)," the judge's opinion reads. "Similarly, the content of any television show that does not have a sufficiently diverse cast would be or would have been subject to court scrutiny.

Judge Trauger sided with ABC, et al, on the First Amendment argument.

ABC has not yet responded to TheWrap's request for comment.

"Ultimately, whatever messages "The Bachelor" and "The Bachelorette" communicate or are intended to communicate - whether explicitly, implicitly, intentionally, or otherwise - the First Amendment protects the right of the producers of these shows to craft and control those messages, based on whatever considerations the producers wish to take into account."

Students at L?Ecole de Choix (School of Choice) in Haiti are receiving the best education of their lives.

DePaul University ethics professor Laura Pincus Hartman helped build the school last year. She has been working in Haiti since even before the earthquake devastated the region and has used her experience as an educator to help the community there.

L?Ecole de Choix targeted?183 children ages 4-10 who had no education and no access to a healthy meal. One year later, those children who could not read or write are speaking and writing in French, Creole and English.

?The only way to help a country and a nation progress is to educate the young, ? Hartman told NBC Chicago.

The school is located on the same river where the cholera outbreak is affecting many Haitians. Much of the only nutrition the children get is from the school.

?This is life and death,? she said.

Hartman told Chicago Parent, the school is not a charity but ?provides financial resources to help people lift themselves out of poverty.?
