Real-life meth trade is cracked by 'Breaking Bad'

(AP) ? News of drug cartels mass-producing souped-up methamphetamine ? that's the latest word as reported by The Associated Press, and it sounds pretty scary.

But haven't we heard this story before? Like on "Breaking Bad," the AMC network's addictive drama series?

Take a look at the real-life drug biz. Then compare it to the saga of fictitious Walter White, the timid-chemistry-teacher-turned-masterful-drug-lord of "Breaking Bad." Real life seems to be reflecting art. Or is it the other way around?

Just consider ...

The product:

? Today's newly potent meth has a tell-tale bluish-white color, and it's purer than ever: as high as 88 percent. No wonder! "Shake-and-bake" pushers are deferring to the experts. Recipes have been developed by professional chemists.

? Walter White, in his newly assumed alter ego of Heisenberg, has flooded the market with a product renowned for its distinctive blue color. And acclaimed for its high quality: 99 percent pure. No wonder! Walter is not just a chemistry teacher, but a world-class chemist who never reached his potential ? until now.

The facility:

? Factory-like "superlabs" in Mexico are turning out meth with large-scale efficiency.

? Same on "Breaking Bad," although, in keeping the story close to home, the product can proudly claim to be "Made in U.S.A."

That is, Walter (played by series star Bryan Cranston) and his maladroit assistant, Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), have followed the American dream. They started small (cooking meth in meager batches in a battered RV) then graduated to factory proportions in their hometown of Albuquerque, N.M.

For a time, the duo threw in with Gus Fring, a meth king who had hidden a state-of-the-art meth facility beneath his industrial laundry-processing plant. (This seems to echo the strategy of an underground lab discovered in Mexico equipped with an elevator and ventilation systems as well as cooking and sleeping provisions.)

But by this season (whose first half aired this summer), Fring's lab had been destroyed and Fring eliminated savagely thanks to Walter, who was plotting to solidify his own drug empire.

Meanwhile, "Breaking Bad" has acknowledged the existence of large labs cropping up in Mexico. One, run by a major drug cartel, even attempted to impound Jesse Pinkman to apply the Heisenberg knowhow to boost its quality and volume.

The distribution:

? Large quantities of meth are turning up in American cities, where it was seldom seen in the past.

? On "Breaking Bad," the Heisenberg brand of designer meth is being seen in Walter's hometown of Albuquerque and throughout the Southwest, as tracked by his brother-in-law, who, inconveniently, happens to be a local DEA agent.

The future:

? The real-life prospects for drug trafficking in the U.S. typically seem to lie somewhere between unknowable and bleak.

? What happens next on "Breaking Bad" (whose final eight episodes air next summer) is as closely guarded by the show's producers as any undercover drug ring's trade secrets. But maybe one way to crack how the series might conclude is to follow news about the all-too-real drug wars.

Scientists show evolution in action in decades-long E. coli study

Web edition : Friday, October 12, 2012

A decades-long experiment finds bacteria evolved over that time to eat a new food. Flasks of the germs turned cloudy when the bacteria ate this food citrate.

E. coli bacteria live naturally in the human gut. For almost 25 years, researchers at Michigan State University have been growing the germs in 12 glass flasks. The microbes have been growing, and reproducing ? and growing some more. Meanwhile, biologists have been watching, watching, watching.

Richard Lenski and his coworkers recently reported a new finding from the long-term project. In one flask, the bacteria the scientists were nurturing did something momentous: They gradually evolved, or changed. In this case, the tiny organisms developed the ability to eat a new food ? but only when oxygen is around.

Dogs suffer PTSD-like stress after Japan disaster

Family dogs caught up in the Japan earthquake of 2011 and subsequent nuclear disaster at Fukushima showed signs of stress not inconsistent with PTSD long after the events, a new study finds.

The research compared abandoned dogs rescued from Fukushima with non-disaster affected dogs abandoned in 2009 and 2010, before the earthquake. The dogs that lived through the disaster had stress hormone levels five to 10 times higher than the dogs that were simply abandoned or found as strays.

"Long-term care and concern regarding the psychological impact of disasters appears necessary in humans and companion animals," the researchers wrote today (Oct. 11) in the journal Scientific Reports.

As part of a dog-rehabilitation program at Azabu University in Japan, researchers took in eight dogs from shelters in Kanagawa Prefecture and measured their levels of physical stress by monitoring the stress hormone cortisol in the dogs' urine. After the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, thousands of refugees were forced to abandon their dogs. Many of the animals lived a semi-feral existence in areas made uninhabitable for humans by the Fukushima nuclear plant meltdown that followed the disaster. [ Photos: Japan's Rescued Pets ]

In May and November 2011, the Azabu University team took in 17 abandoned dogs collected at shelters and rescue centers in Fukushima. These dogs, like the Kanagawa canines, were rehabilitated and had their cortisol levels monitored daily. All dogs were later adopted by new owners.

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: Next year, the committee behind the Nobel Prize for physics could have a huge Higgs hassle on its hands. And maybe that's a good thing.

    3. Singing mice can change their tune
    4. How long can DNA last? A million years

When compared with the Kanagawa dogs, the Fukushima dogs were less aggressive toward unfamiliar people but also less attached to caregivers and more difficult to train. The disaster-affected dogs had five to 10 times the cortisol levels of dogs not touched by disaster, a gap that narrowed but did not close even after 10 weeks of loving care in the rehabilitation program.

The Fukushima dogs' handicaps in trainability echo learning problems in human trauma survivors with post-traumatic stress disorder, the researchers wrote. They suggested that similar brain chemicals could be at play in dogs and humans. Trauma-impaired humans can also struggle to bond with others, similar to the Fukushima dogs' lack of attachment to their caregivers.

The researchers warned that the samples were small and not entirely equivalent, with the Fukushima dogs being older, on average, than the Kanagawa dogs. Nevertheless, they found no evidence that age affected how dogs responded to abandonment, suggesting the disaster was the biggest driver of the dogs' stress.

"Humans affected by the disaster are already recovering and gradually returning to normal life," the researchers wrote. "However, our results suggest the possibility that stress can induce excessive, deep psychosomatic impacts with implicit behavioral manifestations, such as deficits in attachment and learning ability also in dogs."

The uber-high divorce rate among Hollywood couples has created some seriously big (and complicated) blended families that put fictional ones like "The Brady Bunch" to shame. With biological children, stepchildren, half children and adopted children, some Tinseltown broods have almost enough members to fill the starting lineup of an NFL football team!

Click through the slides below to see five of the biggest celebrity blended families.
