Nanoparticles Could Let You Wear a Computer Made Out of Cotton (Mashable)

Tablets and ereaders are so 2011 -- a global group of material scientists have found a way to turn cotton into transistors and electrical circuits. In the (not so distant) future, Apple's newest product might just be a t-shirt. That might be a bit of fantasy but the science is very real. The group of scientists -- from top universities in Italy, France and America -- created two kinds of transistors, an organic field-effect transistor (OFET) similar to those found in a computer's CPU and a lower-voltage organic electrochemical transistor (OCET), ExtremeTech reported.

[More from Mashable: Social Network for Robots Lets You Talk to Your Roomba]

To create the transistors, the group coated cotton threads with gold nanoparticles and a variety of conductors. The process creates cotton that is stiffer than that found in your standard shirt, but more elastic and with ability to carry a current. Best of all, according to the group's research paper, the coating process is not time-consuming and is much like dyeing standard fabrics.

Apparel companies have tried putting electronics into clothing for a long time, whether its light-up graphics or even a functional mini-amp. The paper takes those concepts light-years forward by turning the actual material into a computing matrix. As ExtremeTech points out, most cotton clothing is made of hundreds and hundreds of interconnected threads. The computing possibilities for these transistor threads is off the charts. The real trick will be making sure you keep your wardrobe charged.

All-Teen 'Wedding Singer' Musical Opens Thursday

WEST HARTFORD ??

About 25 students are spending their winter break preparing for the Mandell JCC's all-teen musical, "The Wedding Singer," an '80s flashback comedy that will open Thursday at the Zachs Campus, 335 Bloomfield Ave.

The director, 17-year-old Mac Cherny, is a senior at Conard High School. Other Greater Hartford students from ages 11 to 17 are involved in producing, choreographing and starring in the show, which is based on the 1998 Adam Sandler film.

"I've been in the JCC almost every day, and we've been working around the clock," Cherny said Friday. "It's all put on by the kids."

Cherny described the musical as "Sandler's humor with a really awesome '80s soundtrack."

The lead actors are Hall High School's Max Ferrar, playing Robbie Hart, the broken-hearted New Jersey wedding singer; and Mercy High School's Abby Geremia in the role of Julia Sullivan, the waitress who Robbie eventually woos.

Teen musicians Stephen Bridgman, Alonzo DeJesus, Max Dvorin, Jonathan Sussler, Dan Weinreb and Emily Weiser will perform the musical score of '80s pop songs, organizers said.

The opening performance is set for 7 p.m. Thursday in the Mandell JCC's Herbert Gilman Theater, followed by encore shows at 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 8.

Tickets ? $5 for students and $8 for adults ? can be purchased at the Mandell JCC Box Office, 860-231-6316 or tickets@mandelljcc.org, and the Member Services Center, 860-236-4571.

'Record year' for ivory seizures

More elephant tusks were seized in 2011 than in any year since 1989, when the ivory trade was banned, international wildlife trade group Traffic says.

The group said elephants have had a "horrible year", with 23 tonnes of ivory seized - representing at least 2,500 dead animals.

Trade in ivory was banned in 1989 to save elephants from extinction.

But it has continued illegally because of huge demand in Asia, where it is used to make decorative objects.

"The escalating large ivory quantities involved in 2011 reflect both a rising demand in Asia and the increasing sophistication of the criminal gangs behind the trafficking," said a statement from Traffic, which monitors the trade in wildlife products.

"Most illegal shipments of African elephant ivory end up in either China or Thailand."

Shifting smuggling routes

The group said there had been at least 13 large seizures of ivory this year, amounting to more than 23 tonnes, compared to six last year of less than 10 tonnes.

"In 23 years of compiling ivory seizure data... this is the worst year ever for large ivory seizures. 2011 has truly been a horrible year for elephants," Traffic's elephant expert Tom Milliken said.

Traffic said the smugglers appear to have shifted away from using air to sea - in early 2011, three of the large scale ivory seizures were at airports but later in the year most were found in sea freight.

"The only common denominator in the trafficking is that the ivory departs Africa and arrives in Asia, but the routes are constantly changing, presumably reflecting where the smugglers gamble on being their best chance of eluding detection," it said.

In six of the large 2011 seizures, Malaysia was a transit country in the supply chain, Traffic said.

In the most recent case on 21 December, Malaysian authorities seized hundreds of African elephant tusks worth about $1.3 million (?844,000) that were being shipped to Cambodia.

The ivory was hidden in containers of handicrafts from Kenya's Mombasa port, Traffic said.

Mr Milliken said despite the seizures, there were generally few arrests.

"I fear the criminals are winning," he said.

Some environmental campaigners say the decision to allow some southern African countries, whose elephants populations are booming, to sell their stockpiles of ivory has fuelled the illegal trade.

Those countries - South Africa, Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe - however, deny this and argue they should be rewarded for looking after their elephant populations.

Google Plus can reach 400 million users in 2012, already has 62 million says unofficial statistician

Google may have finally found a solution to the social networking problem that has eluded them for years ? Google Plus is populated by 62 million users and will hit 400 million by the end of 2012, according to self-proclaimed ?unofficial statistician? Paul Allen (no, not that Paul Allen).

The last official figure we got was 40 million users, but that was way back in October. Allen?s estimates put the growth rate of Google Plus at 625,000 new users per day. At this rate, Google Plus will hit the 100 million users mark before the end of February and 200 million in August.

By end of the 2012 that number grows to 293 million. But Paul Allen bets the number of newcomers per day will increase, so Google Plus will actually have 400 million users by the end of next year.

Now, Allen may have a tendency to overestimate the number of users ? for example, he reported 50 million users at the end of September, then in October Google came out with an official number of 40 million.

Still, if Google manages to attract even just 200 million users to its social network in less than two years, it will be an amazing feat. It took Facebook about 4 years to hit that mark in April 2009 (though they?ve grown to 800 million since then).

Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Wants More Coverage Under Medicare (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics announced on Monday that it is urging the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to make changes. The Academy believes that medical nutrition therapy must be expanded to include more conditions. The organization is once again highlighting an ongoing problem with Medicare's focus on acute illness and the inability to properly manage chronic conditions.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics wants to include medical nutrition therapy for more chronic conditions. Currently, only renal disease and diabetes are covered. The organization is asking the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to cover cardiovascular disease, hypertension and other chronic conditions. The Academy believes that this type of therapy can actually reduce medical costs because it serves as preventive treatment.

This is not the first time that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services have been encouraged to make changes and handle chronic conditions better. A study from 2006 already illustrated how Medicare's focus on acute illness and neglect of chronic conditions could be dangerous. As the population of the United States continues to age, chronic disease is becoming more prevalent. The CDC reports that 7 out 10 deaths in the United States are caused by chronic disease. It is an epidemic that will get only get worse.

The CDC recognizes poor nutrition as one of the main causes of chronic disease in the country. However, Medicare continues to limit the types of conditions that quality for medical nutrition therapy, and no changes to this policy have been planned. Although the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics plans to pursue this issue, it is difficult to assess the possible success of creating a policy change. The American College of Physicians presented a paper in 2006 that clearly highlighted the growing need to handle chronic conditions, yet the issue has been ignored for years.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has the opportunity to enact real change and drastically improve the health conditions of an aging population. By expanding the number of conditions that quality for medical nutrition therapy, health costs can actually be cut because preventative treatments can save money.

This DIY Solar Powered Robot Kit Is Your Creative Deal of the Day [Dealzmodo]

I hate being sick. I hate being sick on a Friday. Of all days, right! I hate being sick when the sun is out. Why not pound my head on a rainy day? I pretty much hate everything when I'm sick. So my solution is to make these foolish pacts with myself that I'm going to do everything when I get better. Like I'm going to be a different person. I'm going to go to the gym! To the museums! To volunteer! You just see, when I'm back on my feet, I'll be a better person! And well, that never happens. I just get better and forget about ever being sick. So being sick sucks. It makes you crazy. Having a 6-in-1 DIY Solar Powered Robot Kit for 10 bucks doesn't suck. -CC More »

Nintendo 3DS tour guides might make the Mona Lisa less underwhelming

Other than wine, cheese and overwhelming apathy, the Louvre stands alone as France's most prized national treasure. It's enormous, it's teeming with art, and it's really old. Starting in March, though, the museum will get an infusion of comparatively new technology, thanks to the Nintendo 3DS. As the AFP reports, Nintendo has agreed to provide the Louvre with some 5,000 pocket consoles, to be offered as digital tour guides for museum patrons. With these devices tucked securely inside their fanny packs, wandering tourists will be able to pinpoint their location within the museum, select themed itineraries, and listen to audio commentary available in seven different languages. The consoles will eventually replace the museum's more traditional audio guides, as part of a wider campaign to bring 21st century technology to the Louvre's 12th century confines. "We are the first museum in the world to do this," Agnes Alfandari, the Louvre's head of multimedia, told the AFP, adding that a slate of dedicated smartphone and tablet apps is also in the works.

Subprime scandal: ex-Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac execs accused of fraud (The Christian Science Monitor)

Six former top executives at the housing giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac misled investors about the subprime-loan risks they faced, the Securities and Exchange Commission alleged in a civil fraud lawsuit Friday.

Those charged include the men who were chief executives of these government-chartered mortgage enterprises. Daniel Mudd headed Fannie Mae and Richard Syron led Freddie Mac as the housing boom ended and the financial crisis began.

The lawsuit is significant because some finance experts have sharply criticized the federal government for failing to prosecute more executives who may have contributed to the financial meltdown, and because the future of Fannie and Freddie is now a matter of hot political debate.

RECOMMENDED: Six cities that defy that housing gloom

"Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac executives told the world that their subprime exposure was substantially smaller than it really was," said Robert Khuzami, SEC's enforcement director, in filing the suit in New York. "These material misstatements occurred during a time of acute investor interest in financial institutions' exposure to subprime loans, and misled the market about the amount of risk."

Fannie and Freddie play a major role in the US housing market, providing guarantees for the safety of loans that conform to their standards. Banks and other mortgage lenders are able to issue so-called conforming loans and resell them in bundles to investors (who then reap a stream of income from monthly mortgage payments).

By doing this, the companies have cultivated a broad supply of credit for housing, keeping the mortgage market moving even as other private firms were pulling back during the crisis.

But the firms are oddball entities. Before the crisis, they were publicly owned companies, seeking to show profits and strength to their private shareholders. But they also operated with a Congress-derived mandate to play their unique role in the US mortgage business.

The lawsuit alleges that, when it came to talking to their own shareholders, the six executives played down the financial risks. In the end, by late in 2008, Fannie and Freddie were placed under federal conservatorship. They continue to operate, but their long-term future is a matter that Congress will need to address in the coming year or so.

Fannie and Freddie both entered into agreements with the government on Friday, accepting responsibility without admitting or denying the charges. The government-controlled companies also agreed to cooperate with the SEC on the cases against the former executives.

The Justice Department has opened up probes into Fannie and Freddie but has not charged anyone with a crime.

In a statement released through his attorney, Mr. Mudd said the lawsuit "should never have been brought" and said the government reviewed and approved all the financial disclosures of the company.

"Every piece of material data about loans held by Fannie Mae was known to the United States government to the investing public," Mudd said. "The SEC is wrong, and I look forward to a court where fairness and reason ? not politics ? is the standard for justice."

Mr. Syron's lawyers said the case was "without merit" and said the term "subprime had no uniform definition in the market" at that time.

According to the lawsuit, Fannie told investors in 2007 that it had roughly $4.8 billion worth of subprime loans on its books, or just 0.2 percent of its portfolio. The SEC says that Fannie actually had about $43 billion worth of products targeted to borrowers with weak credit, or 11 percent of its holdings. The suit cites similar numbers for Freddie.

SEC documents on Friday quoted a Freddie Mac legal counsel warning the firm's CEO in May 2007, "We should reconsider making as sweeping a statement as we have 'basically no subprime exposure.' " In a speech, Syron still used the line, "basically no subprime exposure," according to the SEC.

So far, the companies have cost taxpayers almost $150 billion ? the largest bailout of the financial crisis. They could cost up to $259 billion, according to its government regulator, the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

In July, Citigroup paid just $75 million to settle similar civil charges with the SEC. The company's chief financial officer and head of investor relations were accused of failing to disclose more than $50 billion worth of potential losses from subprime mortgages. The two executives charged paid $100,000 and $80,000 in civil penalties.

Such lawsuits are just part of America's coming to terms with the financial crisis.

Finance experts say that fraud played a role in the housing bubble and crisis, but that other causes were also prominent.

The Financial Crisis Inquiry Commission, tasked by Congress to determine the causes of the crisis, reached a split verdict.

Its report cited failures of corporate governance and ethics. But it also cited broader problems such as failed risk-management practices.

"The crisis was a result of human mistakes, misjudgments, and misdeeds," the report said in part.

? Material from wire services was used in this report.

Cantor pledges to expand STOCK act (Politico)

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor says he?ll push for broad action early next year to crack down on alleged congressional corruption and make sure lawmakers don?t profit from inside information.

In an interview excerpt released Friday, Cantor says the measure will expand on the STOCK Act ? legislation explicitly banning congressional insider trading that?s rapidly gained traction on both sides of Capitol Hill since a ?60 Minutes? report in November highlighted the practice.

?We want to make sure the public understands we abhor that kind of conduct,? Cantor said in the interview, also on ?60 Minutes,? which will air Sunday.

Last week, Cantor pressured House Financial Services Committee Chairman Spencer Bachus to abruptly cancel a committee markup on the STOCK Act. Cantor, the House?s No. 2 Republican, privately told Bachus ? who had been a major target of the ?60 Minutes? probe ? that he should not have moved forward on the bill without clearing it with GOP leaders in the lower chamber.

House Democratic backers of the STOCK Act ? who were thrilled to see committee action on the legislation, Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.) in particular ? were left peeved by Cantor?s behind-the-scenes moves to halt the bill from moving forward, and wrote a letter to Cantor asking him to reconsider.

In the ?60 Minutes? interview, Cantor gave some hints as to how the broader package would build on the STOCK Act, which focuses on stock trades. For example, Cantor said government officials with access to inside information could unfairly profit from land sales.

?It is to expand the notion that somehow it?s only stock purchases and trading that is somehow the only thing that could potentially go wrong,? he said.

The measure could come as early as the first couple of months of 2012, Cantor indicated.

Little known before the news investigation, the STOCK Act ? short for ?Stop Trading on Congressional Knowledge Act? ? has now grown to 237 co-sponsors in the House. In the upper chamber, its companion legislation cleared a Senate panel earlier this week.

Britney Spears, Jason Trawick: A Timeline Of Their Love

The couple started dating in 2009 while Trawick was still Britney's agent.
By Jocelyn Vena

Months ago, rumors began circulating that Britney Spears and longtime boyfriend Jason Trawick were going to tie the knot. And on Friday (December 16), sources close to the pair and a mysterious tweet from the star herself confirmed that the couple is engaged.

Trawick had already been working with the star as her agent at William Morris Endeavor Entertainment when they began dating in 2009. They went public with their romance when they showed up hand-in-hand to the 2010 Grammy Awards. That May, the two decided to separate their business and personal relationships, and it was confirmed that Trawick would no longer be representing Spears.

The pair have always been pretty low-key. In an interview with Ryan Seacrest this March, the pop star opened up about their life together. "We're really normal," she said. "We just like to watch movies; we work out a lot; we take walks." In May, Spears told Harper's Bazaar, "I've thought about both [marriage and kids]," saying that tying the knot with Trawick could happen "if the timing was right."

And in an interview with Us Weekly in April, Spears gushed about life with Trawick. "We have such a great time together! He makes me laugh, and we are so comfortable being ourselves," she said. "Maybe [I'll marry again]. Never say never!"

In August, Spears and Trawick walked the red carpet at the 2011 MTV VMAs, and Britney later thanked Trawick when she took the stage to accept her Moonman for Best Pop Video for "Till the World Ends."

While the two have remained relatively private, they gave fans a peek at their personal life when they played the lead roles in Britney's "Criminal" video. The video focuses on a fictional love affair between their characters, who go on a crime spree that leads to a steamy encounter. Director Chris Marrs Piliero said Trawick "killed it."

This will be Britney's third marriage. She was married to Jason Alexander for 55 hours in 2004. Later that year, she married back-up dancer Kevin Federline; the two divorced in 2006. Federline and Spears have two sons, Jayden James and Sean Preston.

A rep for the singer has yet to confirm the news of this latest engagement to MTV News.

Send your well-wishes to Britney and Jason in the comments.

NTSB is Wrong on Banning Personal Electronics in Cars (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | The Los Angeles Times reports that Tuesday the National Transportation Safety Board voted unanimously to recommend that states ban the use of cell phones and other electronic devices by drivers unless an emergency is present. A recent survey by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration concluded that half of all drivers between the ages of 21 and 24 have indeed texted or emailed while being behind the wheel of an automobile. As a 24-year-old female driver, here is how I personally feel about this latest suggested ban.

I am not a supporter of a ban similar to the one that the NTSB has proposed, especially considering that this would be a ban in all states. I firmly believe that a ban on communication devices or electronics should be left to each state to decide what is considered legal and illegal. A ban on cell phones or electronics is a state issue, and should not be decided by the federal government, because it is not the job of the government to ban such products from all drivers.

I also am not a supporter of the cell phone or electronics ban because this is something that cannot be enforced. I would really like to know how such a ban could be enforced on any level, including nationwide. Unless a driver is beside a police cruiser and the cop looks over and sees a driver on the phone, there is no way that this ban could ever be enforced. The only way this could be enforced is through random stops by the police. It is not so much that I do not think texting or emailing should be illegal while driving, I just know through common sense that this could never be enforced equally across the board. I would change the ban to allow hands-free communications, but I still do not see how a cop could enforce someone violating that rule.

If someone violated such a ban if it went through, I do not think there is any penalty that would stop someone from doing it again. If a cop gives a driver a ticket, that is not going to stop the driver from doing it again, and serves no real purpose in the name of safety. I have personally almost been in a crash because I was texting while driving, but I would have only run off of the road, and not harmed anyone else in the process, but that does not make it right. Knowing how close I was to an accident did not change my views on texting or emailing, and I do not think any penalty would have stopped me after that.
